Facebook Timeline Privacy: Hide Friends, Likes, Map, Old Posts

Saturday, May 12, 2012 0 comments

Facebook’s new Timeline has caused much debate. While some users have willingly embraced the new layout, others have protested that the compulsory shift is an invasion of  personal privacy. This is mainly due to the fact that older posts – previously buried safely within the abyss of Facebook – could now be available for anyone to easily view due to a new feature allowing them to click on a chosen year, listed on the right hand side of people’s profile pages as history navigation. A click would then bring up the person’s entire activity for that year.

Facebook Timeline Privacy: Hide Friends, Likes, Map, Old Posts

Facebook issued a statement saying that users had more freedom through the new layout to control who sees what, although users argued that this was both time-consuming and confusing. However, the new layout is here to stay.

Remove Content You don’t want Others to see on your Facebook Timeline

If you don’t want everyone to see your every action from 2007 – such as what you had for dinner, what you thought, liked and shared – here’s a step-by-step guide to manage privacy settings for your facebook Timeline.

Hiding Timeline Elements like Friends, Map, Friending Activity, Likes, Social Reader etc

► Friends : Click the Friends link on your timeline and it will take you to your friend-list page.  Click on the ‘Edit‘ button on the top-right and select the appropriate option from the drop down.
Facebook Timeline Privacy: Hide Friend List
While it is a good idea to keep your friend-list visible to only ‘Friends without Acquaintances‘ but I would recomend to select ‘Custom‘ and show it to a limited number of people who you might have organised into a custom Facebook List.
Map : If you don’t want people to see the history of all the places that you’ve stayed and checked-in on a map, then you can hide map on your Facebook timeline. Click on the down arrow icon at the end of your Timeline favorites. (see pic. below)
Facebook Timeline Privacy: Hide Friend Map
Once you click it hover your mouse pointer on the Map tile and you should see an edit icon (pencil) at the corner. Click it and select ‘Remove from Favorites‘ to hide map from your facebook timeline.
► Friending  Activity : Sometimes you may want to keep the knowledge of whom you add as friends personal. To hide friending activity from your timeline wall, browse down to the widget that shows your recent friend additions.
Facebook Timeline Privacy: Hide Friending  Activity
Hover your mouse on the top-right corner and click on the edit icon (pencil) and select ‘Hide from Timeline‘ to hide the friends widget or ‘All Friends Added…‘  to hide whom you’ve recently add as friends on facebook.
Likes and Other Activity Widgets : By default your Facebook timeline will show almost all the activity that you do on facebook like reading news though a social reader app or commenting and liking stuff, joining groups and events, posts made by apps you have installed.
Facebook Timeline Privacy: Hide Social Activity
You can hide them if you want by click the same edit (pencil) icon on the top right that appears when you take your mouse close to the top-right corner of the social widget on your timeline and choose ‘Hide from Timeline‘.

Hide Old Posts, Keep them Visible to Friends Only

Go to your profile page and click the drop down arrow to the right of the ‘Home’ tab in the top right hand corner of the screen. Select ‘Privacy Settings’. The first thing you should do is limit the visibility of your old posts. On the list of options, select Manage Past Post Visibility as per the following screen shot.
Facebook Timeline Privacy: Hide Old Posts
A warning sign will pop up, as illustrated in the next screen shot. Clicking ‘Limit Old Posts’ is an action that cannot be undone, so to the left of that there is an option ‘Learn about changing old posts’ (see the second screen shot). When you click Limit Old Posts, anyone not on your friend list will not be able to view posts on your Timeline.

Managing Default Privacy while Posting Status Updates / Images From Mobile Device

To ensure that content you post from a mobile device or app stays private, there is also a setting to control this. On the main privacy settings menu, and look for ‘Control Your Default Privacy’ and select ‘Friends’ or select the option that suits you.
Facebook Timeline Privacy: Hide Old Posts
But you can also control who you allow and who you do not allow to view information posted from your mobile or applications other than Facebook by customizing the post visibility settings to your preferences by clicking Custom. Type in friends’ names or the custom lists you’ve created into the ‘Make this visible to’ or ‘Hide this from’ option boxes, as illustrated.

Manage Who can Post on Your Timeline Wall

Next go back to the main Privacy Settings menu and select ‘Timeline and Tagging’. This option will control who is able to post what content on your Timeline. You can control posts, tagging in photos, and can choose to review content before it is posted. Take a look at the below screen shot to help you.
Facebook Timeline Privacy: Who can Post on Your Timeline Wall

Manage Who can Connect with You on Facebook

Next, you should think about what information you wish to be available to people who search for you that are not on your friend list. On the main ‘Privacy Settings’ menu, selected ‘How you connect’. The screen shot below shows the options that are available for restriction, including your contact details, messaging, and friend request options.

Protect Your Personal Information from Facebook Apps

Did you know that your personal information is also available to view through the apps you have downloaded to Facebook? Privacy controls on these apps are controlled separately to those on your main Facebook page.
Facebook Timeline Privacy: Protect Your Personal Information from Facebook Apps
To limit them, select ‘Apps and Websites’ from the main privacy settings menu. The following screen shot appears. Here you can see all the apps you have subscribed to, and can adjust privacy for each one.

Start Orb Mover: Move your Start Button and Start Menu to different locations on your Taskbar

Sunday, March 11, 2012 0 comments

For as many years as long as one can remember…on websites, on blogs, on forums…users have been asking for and discussing a way to move the Start Orb – but without much success. There have been tools to change Start Orbs or change Start Button Tooltips or to remove Start Buttons… but none to move the Start Button or the Start Menu to another location.

Start Orb Mover

Customization and tweaking enthusiasts – we now present to you, our new freeware : Start Orb Mover! Our TWC developer Lee Whittington was working on it for the last one year, with little luck – until now! This portable freeware will now allow you to move the Start Button and the Start Menu to either the center of the Taskbar or far right\bottom, depending on Taskbar location.

Start Orb Mover will let you move or re-locate your Start Button and Start Menu to any location on your Taskbar. Clicking on the re-located Start Orb will open the Start Menu, relative to the location of the Start Orb.
Start Orb Mover also gives users a quick option to do tasks such as Change Start Orb, Restart Explorer, Open an Administrative Command Prompt, Exit Explorer, Open Explorer, Open Start Menu and Taskbar Properties, Hide the Taskbar or change location of Start Orb, simply by right-clicking the Start Orb.

Features of Start Orb Mover:
  • Move Start Orb Center or Right\Bottom
  • Start Orb Changer
  • Show\Hide Taskbar
  • Start Menu\Taskbar Properties
  • Exit Explorer
  • Open Explorer like how the standard Start Menu does
  • Restart Explorer
  • Open Administrative Command Prompt
  • Load on Startup.

Start Orb Mover is a work-in-progress and there are a few thing you should note before you use the tool:
  1. Alignment of the Notification Area when Start Orb is set to Right\Bottom position is set this way, due to the Notification Area having the ability to resize when more applications having Notification Icons are opened. This keeps the Notification Area from “under-lapping” the Start Orb.
  2. Do not change position of the Taskbar while Orb Mover is running, as it will cause the system to not update in a manner that keeps the Start Orb aligned with the change. If you do happen to move the Taskbar while Orb Mover is running, just change the position of Start Orb and it will readjust properly.
  3. Sometimes when you open the Start Menu and scroll through the menu items on the right-hand side, it will leave an odd color hue behind. It appears to happen due to forcing the Start Menu to open in a position it was not designed for. The developer is working on finding a solution and the app will be updated if a fix is found.
  4. When you click to open Start Menu and then close the Start Menu, the orb displayed in the background in default position. Clicking or moving mouse over Orb Mover will fix this.

XAMPP: Easily Install A Web Server In Your Windows

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 0 comments

Whether you’re someone running a corporate server, a hobbyist who wants to make a simple web presence, or a freelancer trying to make a website to market yourself, you shouldn’t overlook the advantages Apache Friends’ XAMPP package has to offer. This application has everything you need to get your site started without a messy installation process – PHP, Apache, MySQL, and FileZilla. It’s not just a bundled package. XAMPP offers you an installer much like the installer for any other normal Windows application all within the reach of a beginner.

Note: XAMPP is available for Linux and Mac as well. In this article, we will focus solely on the Windows version.

What Makes XAMPP So Special

Let’s say you’re installing Apache in Windows. You take the time to set everything up and you start running your website. The problem is that you can’t actually do anything lucrative on the site that doesn’t involve static pages unless you have an SQL server. You then install your favorite SQL server application and realize that you still haven’t installed PHP. The list goes on and on until you’re driven nuts by the complexity of an installation which may take hours.
Here’s where XAMPP comes in. Here you have an application that not only installs all these things you need to run the perfect website, but it also lets you install them as Windows services. Such services allow your computer to run Apache and everything else whenever your computer starts. The applications run silently in the background and don’t take up as many resources as they would if you execute them manually.

How to Install XAMPP

If you really want to give XAMPP a try, go to their download page here and scroll down to the latest version of XAMPP. Click the “Installer” link and download the app, then continue as follows:
1: Browse to the folder to which you downloaded the application and open it up.
xampp-installer
2: Select a language in the installer window and click “OK.” You might get a notice yapping about UAC in Windows if you use Vista or Windows 7. Just click “OK” and ignore it. I’ll talk about UAC in the next section.
3: Click “Next” to continue the installation after it shows you the welcome message nobody reads.
4: Specify a destination folder for the application. Your best bet is to leave it in the default location (“C:\xampp”), since this will make access much easier for you. Click “Next” once you’ve finished this.
5: You’re now seeing a window like this:
xampp-service
Here’s where you can install any of the component applications as services. I highly recommend at least installing MySQL and Apache as a service. Click “Install” once you’re finished. The rest of the process is pretty much self explanatory. Once you install the application, browse to the folder where it installed and check the “htdocs” folder. You can place files in that folder so they show up on your site.

Disabling UAC

If you want to run XAMPP properly, you have to disable User Account Control in your computer. This feature of Windows attempted to enhance the security of your computer by making you approve the actions of programs that you run. Although it sounded like a cute idea, it was proven to be ineffective. If you run a Windows version earlier than Vista, you don’t need to do this:
1: Press “Start + R” on your computer. Your “Start” key is next to either “Alt” key on the keyboard.
xampp-run
2: Type “msconfig” and press “Enter”.
3: Navigate to the “Tools” tab, select “Change UAC Settings” and click “Launch” below the list of tools.
xampp-msconfig
4: Move the slider in the settings window to “Never notify” and click “OK.” You have now disabled UAC.
xampp-uac
Once you’re finished with this, you can expect XAMPP to run smoothly and your web server’s ready for action!

10 Best Ad sense Alternatives for Monetizing Your Blog.

Friday, March 2, 2012 0 comments

Why would you look for best ad sense alternatives? There are many reasons why people search for best ad sense alternatives. Your blog didn’t get approved for using adsense to display ad on it, you got banned for breaking ad sense’s rules and etc.
Although Google ad sense is the biggest and best well-known contextual advertising network, and there are thousands of bloggers who make money with ad sense, the sad truth is that so many bloggers aren’t able to use ad sense. If you are one of those bloggers, here are 10 of the best ad sense alternatives you can use to make money displaying ads on your blog:

Yahoo publisher Network
Best ad sense alternatives- Yahoo publisher
Yahoo publisher is really the closes you can get to Google ad sense. But, one of the things that makes YPN not very appealing to a lot of people, is the fact that they rarely accept new publishers, or if they do, it takes a long time. Just like ad sense, with yahoo publisher, you have to reach $100 before you can request a payment.

Clicksor
Best ad sense alternatives- Clicksor
Clicksor is one of the most trusted Google ad sense alternatives out there. You can choose from many different types of advertisement that fit the style and layout of your blog. They have a very speedy payment process. You can get paid either by check or instantly in pay pal with a minimum of $20.

AdBrite
Best ad sense alternatives- Adbrite
AdBrite without a doubt is one fo the best alternative to ad sense. They offer ads in different forms such as text ads, banner ads, inline ads and in video ads. The good thing about AdBrite is that you can run it with ad sense as long as it looks different than ad sense. The minim required to request a payment is only $20, which is great compere to ad sense’s $100 minimum requirement.

Chitika
Best ad sense alternatives- Chitika
Chitkita is another great ad sense alternative which many bloggers use these days to monetize their blog. Again, you can run it with ad sense and the minimum payment is only $10.

Bidvertiser
Best ad sense alternatives- Bidvertiser
Bidvertiser is by far the most similar ad network to ad sense. It offers contextual ads. You can also make money with their feed ads. Bidvertiser is specially good for blogs related to online money making. You can use it along side ad sense as long as it looks different. The minimum for payout is also $10.

WidgetBucks
Best ad sense alternatives- Widgetbucks
Widget Bucks is famous for its high payout. A lot of opportunities to make money. You can use it along ad sense. It has many different styles of ads. It specifically is good to use on sites with products and services as their topic, with a minimum payout of $50.

Text-Link-Ads
Best ad sense alternatives- Textlinkads
TLA is a little different than normal contextual advertising sites. You can earn money by allowing them to place inline text advertisements on your blog. You can set your own price, which you want to charge for placing inline text advertisement in between your content. They offer very fast payments. Payments are sent via check with a minimum of $25. But, if you want to get paid by paypal, there is no minimum.

InfoLinks
Best ad sense alternatives- Infolinks
Infolink is another great ad sense alternative specializing in In-Text Advertising. It basically turns the main keywords of your page, which aren’t linked to an advertising link. You can use infolink ads combine with any other kinds of ads. I think Infolink is growing fast and very soon it will be one of the In-Text Advertising. leaders. They pay via check or pay pal.

Kontera
Best ad sense alternatives- Kontera
Kontera definitely is one of the best ad sense alternatives. It serves highly relevant In Text ads using its patented semantic engine that helps to truly understand the content of a page. Publishers are paid once a month (first week of the month) when they have reached the minimum required which is $50. You can get paid via by Check, PayPal, Wire transfers or ACH.

TNX
Best ad sense alternatives- Tnx
The cool thing about it is that the price of each link placed on your page is calculated automatically. Few things factor in how the price is set. Things like category, PageRank of each page, link popularity, and how many outbound links your page has. Earnings are paid by PayPal, Webmoney, Check and Wire.

Although many of these advertising companies allow you to serve their ads with other companies ads, don’t stuff your pages with too many ads. It is a turn off for many visitors. You might think you will be able to make more money with more ads on your pages, but in most cases, a well placed ad can make you more money than 10 non relevant and out of place ads. And these 10 best ad sense alternatives are perfect for serving highly targeted and relevant ads that can help you earn more money with ads .

SIM chip cloning instructions

Without further delay, here is exactly how DonJuan successfully cloned his SIM chip:

  1. Buy simcard reader/writer.
  2. Buy blank 3g simcard
  3. Download Magicsim at http://www.magicsim.com/en/multi-sim.asp?new_id=6
  4. Download http://www.filecart.com/Windows/System-Utilities/Backup-Restore/USB-SIM-Card-Reader-Software_1711_1.html
  5. Install programs.
  6. Go in phone tools, select sim card, then select unlock sim, it will promt for a code.
Call AT&T, they will ask for your phone number, your account info, name and security code, then they will ask why you want to unlock your simcard, just tell them you need to unlock your sim to get it to work with your overseas phone or something.
  7. Once they give you the sim unlock code, enter it, and it will say sim unlocked.
  8. Remove the sim from your phone, place it in the cardreader, click read from card in magic sim program.
  9. Once it says connected, select crack sim in the toolbar. click strong ki and clink all of the other find options and then click start.
  10. Once your ki is found and the crack is finished, click file, save as and save your cracked sim info to a dt file.
  11. IMPORTANT!!! you must click disconnect from the file menu or you will ruin your simcard. once it says disconnected, remove the sim. put it in your phone and see if it still works, it should. if not, you either did not unlock your sim, or you tried to copy it instead of crack and save.
  12. Insert black 3g card Use other program, not magic sim at this point.
  13. Click connect
  14. It will say no info found if it is truly blank.
  15. Select write to sim, it will promt you to select a dat file, select the one you saved before, now click start, it will take about 10 minutes to write it, once it is complete, it will ask for a security code, enter the security code AT&T gave you, then click finish.
  16. Your card is cloned. if you try to make 2 calls at the same time, one will go through, the other will say call failed, and both phones will get the same messages, text and voice, and both will recieve the same calls, but only one can talk at a time.

Caveats and warnings about cloning your SIM card

As of yet, I have NOT attempted to follow DonJuan’s instructions so I cannot confirm whether or not this process works. I did download both of the required applications in preparation for my future attempt. Therefore I should point out that I uploaded one of those applications to Virus Total to have it scanned for viruses. I was disappointed to see that F-Secure found one piece of questionable code in the Sim Card reader software listed in step 4. On the other hand F-Secure only represents 1 out of 36 scanners on Virus Total therefore it’s up to you to decide whether or not to install this application.
The MagicSim software unfortunately was too large for Virus Total so I have no idea whether this application is virus free or not. I recommend that if you decide to follow DonJuan’s instructions you do so on an extra computer (one you’re willing to infect with viruses if it comes to that) or install something like VMWare and install these applications in a virtual computer running inside of your current computer. This way, if these applications do have viruses, you can simply kill the infection by deleting the virtual computer.
All that being said, clone your SIM chip with this process at your own risk. As I already mentioned, I have NOT validated these instructions with my own test. I simply put them in a dedicated article on this site because I said I would do something like this if someone provided a detailed list of instructions. If you follow DonJuan’s instructions, and have success, please post a comment here and share your experience with the rest of the TechTraction readers.
Please Note: Keep in mind that blatant SPAM urls added to comments will be removed.

The article explained why such action wasn’t possible with a SIM card reader and basic software. Since that article, the reader comments have been consistently flowing in and the article remains one of my most frequently read items. Despite my explanation, some readers have claimed that they have succeeded at what I said was impossible. Unfortunately, when pressed for details, responses where either nonexistent or lacking critical details. Fortunately, all that changed on 9/26/2008 when reader DonJuan posted a detailed response that might just do what many of us want to do with our SIM cards.
