How to Dual Boot With Windows 8 and Windows 7

People quite often get perplexed whether they can dual boot an existing version of Windows with the new Windows 8.


Windows 7 during its beta had many dual booting issues, hence its common for the consumers to get confused about it. And things might gget more confusing since Windows 8 developer preview has arrived in the market, people are interested to know whether its possible to dual boot windows 7 and windows 8.

Here, we will be discussing about dual boot Windows 8 and Windows 7. This will help you perform the desired task on your own. This will certainly sideline the need of calling up Microsoft technical help and save your time.


Dual Boot Windows 7 Windows 8

1. Download Microsoft Windows 8 Developer Preview from the official website of Microsoft.

2. When downloading prompted, save Windows 8 ISO file to a location in the computer where it is, conveniently, accessible from and then burn it to a DVD media with free DVD burning software. ( Or install the Preview using a USB flash drive. Use the built-in Windows 7 USBDVD Download Tool to do so. Windows 7 USB DVD tool is also available for download from Microsoft Windows.)

3. Backup all your data using data backup software to an external removable storage drive or online backup storage and keep it to a safe place. Configure your computer’s BIOS to boot from any of the drives viz. DVDCD-ROM or USB.

4. Before you begin, you should know that Windows 8 would take about 7.5GB of space for installation. Therefore, you would need about 20GB of free space on your hard disk drive. You can partition hard disk with third party hard disk partition software or windows build-in partition features. Below is the step to partition hard disk with windows build-in partition features.
  • Click on the Start menu, navigate to Computer, right click on it and click on Manage.
  • Scroll down to click on Disk Management in the Windows Management window.Windows 7 Disk management
  • On the right hand side, it will show all the drives currently listed in your computer.
  • In Next, select the drive that you want to shrink, right click on it and choose Shrink Volume.Shrink partition windows 7
  • When a dialog box appears showing the total and available space on the disk, enter the amount that needs to be shrunk.(make sure you allot at least 20GB to the newly created partition since Windows 8 won’t survive for long in a very small partition)
  • Click on the Shrink button to initiate the shrinking. Wait for the procedure to finish. When it will be completed, right click on the unallocated space and select New Simple Volume from the menu.
  • This will open up the New Simple Volume Wizard. Click on ok button and end the program.
5. After creating new hard disk drive, Now reboot your PC and insert bootable Windows 8 live USB /DVD.

6. Follow the instructions and complete the installation. The system might reboot several times while installing windows 8.

7. You will be prompted about any other operating systems installed your PC and if it does, you can assure that the dual boot will be successful since Windows 8 has successfully detected Windows 7 partition.

8. Restart your PC and you will see options to boot from either Windows 7 or windows 8.

You will also notice that the boot menu has had a make over and you will be able to configure the boot menu with ease. Hats off to Microsoft for fixing Windows 8 boot menu
