Colorful Tiles Background in 3 Steps – Tutorial

Welcome everyone! Today we have a small tutorial on colorful tile strips. Achieving this background is very easy and can be finished in only 3 steps. This tutorial is for beginners and average users of Adobe Photoshop.

You will also get chance to download really high-resolution backgrounds / wallpapers in the end of the topic.

Lets do some preparation first

Create a Photoshop document by going to File>New or pressing Ctrl+N. You can also follow the RED CIRCLES in the image below. Click the image to zoom in.

After creating document with desired dimension and resolution, press G for Gradient tool. After going into Gradient tool move your cursor to the top left screen where you can see the present selected color. Click on that color and you will get the following menu.  Follow the RED CIRCLES in the image below so you can append in the new color effect. Choose the Noise Samples and Append it in your present effects. Click on the image to zoom in.

After you have appended in the Noise Samples gradient effect, choose the following effect in the image below.

Lets start the mission.

Step Number 1

After choosing the gradient color, fill your canvas with the color by drawing mouse cursor from left to right or vice-versa as you like it. Your result might look like below.

Step Number 2

Sharpen the gradient using the Unsharp Mask dialog box which you can reach throughFilter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask. Then fill in the value shown below.

Step Number 3

Unsharp mask will sharpen the lines or edges of the gradient. Again go to the Filter>Filter Gallery. Select Texture>Patchwork from the appeared window. Put in the values shown in the following image.

So, here is your final result. You can tweak the values to get different or better results.

Therefore you get colorful tiled background you can use in your artwork or desktop wallpaper. For more detailed view, download the package at the end of the tutorial.

Hey! it’s not finished yet.

Lets add some depth in it.

In the artwork, create a new layer, Press D to bring on the default Black & White color and chooseRadial Style for new gradient on the top left hand side corner. Fill the new layer with the radial gradient with white in the center and black in the corner then set the filter setting of the layer to multiply just like in the following image.

If you find it complicated then their is another step which can give you similar result but not the same. Double click the layer where you applied the gradient on. A Layer Style dialog box will open then change the Inner Shadow option as in the following image.

Changing colors using Hue/Saturation option

This option will help you change the colors keeping your original color safe. Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer> Hue/Saturation. Then change the value of the Hue as shown in the following image. You can put any value until you get desired color.

Therefore this adjustment layer will change the color of the artwork without harming the layer below.
